Reiki History

The most widely accepted history of Reiki holds that the question of how Jesus healed the sick inspired a Japanese scholar, Dr. Mikao Usui, to devote his life to searching for the answer. Finally, after many years of study, he found the knowledge that had been lost. This laying on of hands method of healing was described in a language no longer spoken, on ancient parchment scrolls that had lain for centuries, on a shelf in a storage room of a Buddhist temple in Kyoto.

After seeking spiritual guidance, Dr. Usui treated many people with Reiki. He also taught many others its methods so that they could continue the work of healing themselves and offer healing to others.

Dr Usui did not require that they give up old beliefs or adopt new ones, nor did he ask them to take up other spiritual disciplines to provide a foundation for the healing they had received. He offered Reiki with no strings attached, except that they value the healing they had received.

The early teachings of Reiki by Dr. Usui and others who learned from him, were maintained as an oral tradition. This method of teaching is popular in Japan where it is believed value and meaning is best preserved in this manner. As Reiki was imported to the United States and other western nations this method began to change. Today many books have been published and made available to Reiki practitioners and the general public.

Several variations of Reiki have sprouted up over the last few years. With the understanding that working with the universal life force energy is Reiki’s essential truth, practitioners have found all of the forms to be effective.

The universal life force energy is conscious, purposeful, intelligent, and infinitely loving. This energy ignores differences in spoken and written languages and hand gestures. Inattention, imprecision, or even lack of clear intent will not detour this energy from its prime purpose. Its loving compassionate nature will compensate for human inadequacies. The universal life force energy’s intent is to do healing, and nothing will turn it from this purpose or prevent it from accomplishing this end.
