We are happy to share some of the wonderful essays we receive from our Reiki Home Study Course students.

Healing touch has been around sine the beginning of time. How the healing was perceived depended upon the culture of that time. In primitive times Shamans and Medicine Men used healing touch but many superstitions surrounded the healings. In the Christian religions the bible documents many healings performed by Elijah, Elisha, and Moses. The miracles of Jesus are also well documented in New Testament. Islam had the great healer Mohammed. It is believed Ayurvedic medicine derived from ancient civilization of Mu. Buddhism healing is not just important for physical body but mental and emotional selves must also be healed. Healing use first of all be spiritual.
Years ago healing and medicine were a blend of religion and science not separated as they are today. Today Christians believe God physically heals through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church believes healing takes place through intercessory prayer. As religious belief systems become more open minded and science learns more about quantum physics medicine and healing will come full circle and mind, body, and spirit will be treated as one.

The use of healing touch has been documented throughout history. Healing touch can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt as well as Greece. It is also documented in ancient Chinese and Indian culture. One of the most documented sources of healing touch comes from the Bible. Jesus Christ used healing touch to heal and cure the sick and even told his disciples “To go forth and heal.”
Through centuries past, healing by touch has served as an important part of many religions and cultures. I believe that healing touch should not be used as the only way to heal those who are in need, but must also incorporate prayer, meditations, diet, and spiritual well-being. Through this Level 1 class I hope to learn more about those things. Healing touch is not a religion, but can be used in any religion to aid in healing and reaching optimal well being though equilibrium in any person. Sadly, this practice has seemed to disappear from many religions even though there are documented acts in the Bible and as well as in other historical religious documents.
One of the main reasons I believe that healing touch is not as widely used in religion today is because of modern medicine. Although modern medicine has been a significant development in today’s society and has saved many lives, it has taken away from the more traditional means of healing. Many people in today’s society are so dependent on modern medicine. I do believe that healing touch can be used along with modern medicine to produce an optimal state of well being for any patient. Healing touch may also be used alone to help someone in need. This is how I came to learn about healing touch. Modern medicine could not help me in the way healing touch did for a certain ailment. There is something very special, sacred, and beautiful about healing through touch. I now strongly believe it not being used enough in today’s society whether it is aiding in modern medicine, used alone, and especially in religion.
Regarding religion, healing touch has seemed to have disappeared, simply discarded and often seen as un-needed. Many religious and spiritual people do not even know about healing through touch. However, you do see in many churches and religions, the laying of hands, often by a large group of people to pray for someone in need. One the other hand, it is seen in many churches and religions to not be a necessary part of their doctrine and even being seen as something not from God. This does not make much since to me when I see pastors and church members laying their hands on someone during prayer and even given all the examples in the Bible where healing by touch was performed. There are so many examples of Jesus using healing through touch throughout the Bible and even Moses, Elisha, and Elijah used healing touch as a form of healing. This shows me that there is a significant belief of the laying of hands for healing in religion, but is an often underused and misunderstood gift in any religion today.
